Rugby Southland is pleased to announce Rex Carter as the new President of the Union, following his appointment at the 138th Annual General Meeting, held last night in Invercargill. Carter’s appointment comes after Leicester Rutledge chose not to re-stand for the role of President, marking the end of an era with mixed emotions for the Union. Rutledge, whose service to Southland rugby spans more than 50 years, stepped down after completing his term, making way for Carter to take on the highly respected role within the organisation.
Carter, who has served on the Rugby Southland Board since 2016, is a well-known figure in Southland rugby—particularly in rural communities. His deep connection to grassroots rugby and his tireless advocacy for club rugby make him an ideal figure head to represent the Union as President moving forward.
“Rex has been a trusted voice around our board table and across the rugby community,” said Rugby Southland Board Chairman Murray Brown. “He understands what makes Southland rugby special, and he’ll carry the legacy of those before him with great care. We’re thrilled to welcome him as President.”
Brown also acknowledged the unwavering support of Peter Tetai and Donald Hay, who are both life members of the Union. "Their dedication and contributions to Southland rugby have been vital in shaping the community, and their continued involvement is deeply appreciated", Brown said.
Carter takes over from Rutledge, whose official service to Rugby Southland spans more than 50 years. Leicester made his debut for the province in 1972, went on to become an All Black, and played 100 first-class games for Southland. His post-playing contribution has been just as impactful—serving as Stags coach, manager, life member, and since 2020, President of our Union.
“Leicester has given more to Southland rugby than we could ever sum up in words,” said Rugby Southland CEO Hua Tamariki. “He’s been a player, a coach, a mentor, and a leader. But more than anything, he’s been a presence—a reassuring, passionate, and humble presence—for over five decades. We’re incredibly grateful for his service and proud that he will continue to support the Union as a life member.”
While Rutledge steps away from his official role, his passion for rugby will remain. He’s looking forward to spending more time with his family after his recent retirement from his role on the buses, but will continue to be a life member and active supporter of Southland rugby.
In addition to Carter’s appointment as President, Rugby Southland is pleased to announce that Marc Robertson, a respected member of the Eastern Southland rugby and business community, will be joining the board as a new director. Robertson steps in to fill the vacancy created by Carter’s transition from board member to President. He brings valuable experience, having held roles within Southland Country Rugby, the Mataura Licensing Trust (MLT) Board, and his own business.
“Marc is deeply connected to the rugby landscape in Southland, and his involvement with various community initiatives and organisations will make him an excellent addition to the board,” said Brown. “We are confident that Marc will help drive Rugby Southland’s future success.”
Alongside Robertson, Ashley Light has been reappointed to his third term as a director. Light’s ongoing leadership and experience will continue to provide stability and valuable governance to Rugby Southland.
These changes come as Rugby Southland enters what will be an exciting year, with a renewed focus on local support, strong leadership, and community connection. The Union remains committed to ensuring Southland rugby is well-positioned for the future—on and off the field.
