Rugby Southland is thrilled to announce that veteran player Josh Bekhuis will be named to start for the SBS Bank Southland Stags this Saturday against North Harbour in the Bunnings NPC. This match will mark Bekhuis's 144th appearance for Southland, making him the most capped player in the history of the Stags, surpassing the legendary Jason Rutledge.

Throughout his illustrious 18-year career, Josh has achieved remarkable milestones, including being a two-time Ranfurly Shield winner, a captain of the Stags, and a Southland Centurion. This season, he also made history as the most capped player in New Zealand National Provincial Championship (NPC) history, surpassing Ash Dixon—a testament to his dedication and skill on the field.

Josh Bekhuis made his debut in 2006 against North Otago at Rugby Park, where he is set to etch his name further into the walls of Southland rugby history this weekend. His leadership and commitment have left an indelible mark on the team and its supporters.

Rugby Southland plans to honor Josh’s extraordinary achievements during and after the game, and we invite all rugby supporters to join us at Rugby Park to celebrate this historic occasion.

Coach Matt Saunders commented on Josh’s remarkable achievement, stating, “Hell of an achievement from Josh. To do what he has done for Southland over such a long time is almost hard to believe. To be mentioned in the same breath as Cabbage shows what a legend of the game he is. I am proud to have both played alongside him and to have coached him.”

Hua Tamariki, Rugby Southland's CEO, added, “Josh is a consummate team man, and I could think of no one more fitting to overtake another Stag legend, Jason Rutledge, and take sole possession of the title of Southland's most capped player. The effort required to attain a record like this is demanding, and in the context of modern-day provincial rugby, it’s hard to see Josh being overtaken any time soon. Myself and our team here at Rugby Southland are excited to see the big guy etch his name at the top of our centurion list.”
