It’s a top of the table clash this weekend with W versus W looking to get the big W and take the top of the standing’s spot.
That’s right, Wyndham play host Waikaka and with both teams sitting on 9 wins and 2 losses and with only one bonus point separating these side justifies this week’s choice of game of the round.
The last match up between these teams resulted in a low scoring 3-13 win to Waikaka showing some evidence and possibility that there is such an influence of a home advantage.
Wyndham’s only other loss has been against Midlands and as Waikaka found themselves in the same result against the Winton based side but the difference being the ability to secure a bonus point in a tight finish against Edendale has secured their points position on the table by 1.
Wyndham’s Josh Smith recently celebrated his 100th senior rugby game and will continue to bring plenty of experience to the field and has been named on the wing for the clash. The number 100 and loyalty seems to be a theme that run deep as Matt McRae and Gavin McDermott in the 17 and 18 jerseys also received their 100th game blazers earlier in the season illustrating traits of commitment and contribution that hopefully can transition into good performances on the paddock for the entire side. Captain Joe McRae will be running at 12 and will be sure to lead his team in a tidy performance and is not afraid to put his body on the line against the mighty green and whites.
Waikaka’s season was slow to warm up with 2 losses early on the trot, however their grit and determination from their management and club supporters has enabled the team to then put points on the opposition to enable a consistent climb to the top. After improving week on week against the Northern Southland clustered teams Te Anau, Riversdale and Mossburn began with just a 2 point win margin blowing out to a 14 and 17 convincing win point margins respectively, showing their improvements as a unit.
With Tom Medlicott at either fullback or on the wing will open kicking and attack opportunities for the visiting side especially in the combination of vice-captain Hayden Stephen as he controls the backs while Alex Peirce leads the team from the front from within forwards.
A win with a bonus point could be the separator needed to secure the top spot nearing closer to the playoffs in mid-July. The red and blacks of Midlands and the magpies of Edendale will be looking closely to see the outcome of this clash as it may the determinant of their own potential semi-final match up and destiny. Best of luck to all teams involved and to Michael Taylor who has been appointed as referee for this top of the table clash.
