SBS Bank Southland Stags Draw Impressive Crowd of 7,314 for Bunnings NPC Season Opener at Rugby Park


Southland, New Zealand – August 12, 2024 – The SBS Bank Southland Stags kicked off their Bunnings NPC season with a spectacular display of community support, drawing a vocal crowd of 7,314 to Rugby Park for their opener against Otago on Saturday afternoon. This impressive turnout, reminiscent of rugby’s golden days, has set the standard for the season and reaffirmed Southland’s prominent role in provincial rugby.

Fans filled every available space at Rugby Park, with thousands packed into the terrace and the usable sections of the grandstand. The hospitality suites on the upper floor were sold out, and the tent city at the end of the ground was at full capacity, creating an electric and nostalgic atmosphere that highlighted the community’s deep-rooted passion for rugby.

Hua Tamariki, CEO of Rugby Southland, expressed his excitement and appreciation for the phenomenal turnout. "We are incredibly excited and grateful for the extraordinary support we received at our season opener," said Tamariki. "To see 7,314 fans filling every corner of Rugby Park is a powerful testament to Southland’s dedication to not only the Bunnings NPC, but Rugby as a whole. This turnout not only energises our team but also sets the benchmark for the season and underscores the rich tradition of provincial rugby in Southland."

The enthusiastic crowd not only set an exhilarating tone for the season but also emphasized Southland’s significant contribution to the Bunnings NPC landscape. The Stags are eager to build on this momentum and continue delivering captivating performances for their loyal fans throughout the season, with a shot at the Ranfuly Shield this Saturday in Napier. 

In two weeks time, the ILT and Rugby Southland are set to put on the inner city's largest fireworks display in many years featuring live music from Sam Cullen, this is funded by the ILT  in celebration of 80 years of the ILT supporting our community and is sure to make for a special community celebration. The celebrations will commence after full time of the SBS Bank Southland Stags vs Taranaki game on Saturday August 24th 7.05pm. Tickets are just $20 for adults with 2 kids 13 and under free with each adult.
