What began as a bleak, rain-soaked Southland morning turned into a stirring reminder of what makes this region so special. Despite wind, rain, and weather that had many second-guessing their plans, a crowd of 8,185 packed into Rugby Park on Saturday—an increase of 885 on last year, making it the largest single-game attendance for a Southland NPC match in 14 years.
The build-up to the Stags’ season opener against Otago saw a wild turn in the weather, and while a target of 10,000 had been set, the morning conditions meant many—especially young families—opted for the comfort of home. But those who backed their Southland stubbornness and showed up were rewarded with one of the most electric game-day atmospheres in recent memory.
“The irony is the best part of the day was from the moment the Stags kicked off,” said Rugby Southland Commercial and Marketing Manager Jack King. “You could’ve forgiven people, especially the young families for staying home, but 8,185 turned up. That tells you everything about Southland loyalty.”
The terraces were jammed shoulder to shoulder, as expected—but the biggest change from last year was the grandstand. The half that could be used, it wasn’t just occupied—it was chocker. The crowd was thick with Stags fans, signs and voices rising in unison. Hospitality areas and tents were also packed to capacity, creating a wall-to-wall atmosphere of support.
“You could feel the energy the moment you walked out of the tunnel,” said CEO Hua Tamariki. “It was loud, it was proud, and it was pure Southland. That crowd gave the boys a real lift.”
The milestone crowd, while just short of the 10,000 goal, still represents a remarkable show of support in testing windy conditions—and a powerful reminder that the heart of Southland rugby beats as strongly as ever.
“A lot of provinces would love to bottle whatever it is that Southland has,” said King. “We might not have the biggest stadiums or population, but we’ve got something far more valuable—loyalty. That’s priceless.”
For fans who did brave the weather, it was more than just a rugby game—it was a statement. As one long-time season member summed it up:
“You don’t wait for perfect weather in Southland. You show up, you back your boys, and you make noise. That’s what we do.”
With atleast four more home games still to come, Stag Day has set the tone. Rain or shine, the Southland faithful are all in.
