Rugby Southland is pleased to announce the appointment of Hayden Byars as the new head coach of the I Hire Southland Hinds. Byars, a dedicated coach with a proven track record across various age groups and teams, will bring his extensive experience and passion for the game to the role, as he looks to lead the team to further success in the coming seasons.

Byars’ coaching journey spans multiple levels, with notable experience in both boys’ and girls’ rugby. In 2024, he served as the Head Coach for the Southland U16 Girls and Assistant Coach for the U18 Country Boys and in 2023, Southland U18 Girls team. Prior to that, Byars also had significant coaching roles with Southland Country for two years, St Peters College, and the U15 7s team, where he led two successful Condor 7s campaigns. He has also coached the 1st XV team at St Peters College and the Year 9 & 10 Competitive 15s Girls team.

“I am excited and honoured to take on the head coach role with the I Hire Southland Hinds,” said Byars. “After a successful playing career, my aim has always been to give back to the game that has given me so much. The enjoyment and success I’ve experienced as a coach in recent years has motivated me to continue to develop and improve, and I’m passionate about helping women’s rugby take another step forward in Southland. I’m looking forward to building a strong, competitive team and working towards a successful season ahead.”

Rugby Southland is confident that Byars’ leadership, combined with his strong background in player development, tactical acumen, and his commitment to fostering a positive team culture, will set the stage for a successful future for the I Hire Southland Hinds.

Rugby Southland would like to thank outgoing coaches Craig Pullar and Scott Meredith for their leadership of the Hinds for the past two seasons. 

The I Hire Southland Hinds are looking forward to an exciting season under Hayden Byars’ leadership, and Rugby Southland is eager to see how the team progresses as they prepare for the 2025 season.
